About
I am a PhD student at the University of Exeter studying music sociology under the supervision of professor Tia DeNora. As a broad research question, I am interested in how music and sound are used as resources in forming collectives. By ‘resources’, I look to ways people use music to attain, constitute and elaborate forms of thinking, feeling, being and knowing. I pursue this inquiry by using the case of the Czech Underground, researching in both socialist and post-socialist contexts, from the 1960s to nowadays. I am primarily interested in both cognitive and emotional bases of action, history of sound technology, informal learning through music, music and memory, and qualitative methods.
My undergraduate study in both sociology and music brings me to my present-day research interests: to explore the construction of musical communities in differing socio-historical contexts and their relation to social/cultural change.
I graduated with from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, studying both music and sociology. Following my BA, I conducted research in the Czech Republic with a Fulbright scholarship and completed my MA at Central European University in Hungary. I am also an active musician when time affords, performing and recording as a solo trumpet player.
