About
This research project is sited within the emerging Performance Studies scholarship of pedestrian performance.
Pedestrian performance although still in its infancy as a research subject has a long history in performance practice. Initially, deemed to be no more than a continuation of a great journey out of the conventional theatre space that led to the proliferation of site-based work, the performativity of walking has since become a source of fascination for performers, artists and academics.
However, whilst research into pedestrian performance is focussed almost entirely within site-based forms of performance, my research will explore other geographies of the performance space in a bid to further examine the performativity of walking.
Beginning with the conventional theatre space, I will examine four distinctive geographies of performance bringing into alignment case examples of performances that all concern the action of walking. What this will do is to create a clearer perception of how pedestrian performance, although a new form of research, has a rich history that has yet to be established fully.
