Graduate Student, Politics
College of Social Sciences and International Studies
About
Jan Pieter Beetz read Public Administration and Philosophy of Law and Social Science at the Erasmus University Rotterdam (the Netherlands). In addition to bachelor degrees in both disciplines, he obtained an MSc in International Public Management and Policy (2009; cum laude) and an MA in Philosophy of Science (2010; distinction). Most of his MA coursework for philosophy he completed during a student exchange at the University of Sydney (Australia). Whilst studying, he has worked both as a researcher and a teacher.
The research for both his MSc and MA dissertation inquired into the EU’s legitimacy. For his MSc dissertation, he did empirical research into the public discourse on the EU's legitimacy in the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and France. The dissertation was awarded the Unilever Research Prize 2009. For his MA dissertation, he evaluated the appropriateness of Philip Pettit’s civic republicanism to justify the EU’s authority.
He is currently an MPhil student/PhD candidate in Politics at the University of Exeter. In his thesis, he is further inquiring into the EU’s legitimacy, but from a more historical conceptual perspective. In addition, he is a graduate teaching assistant at the politics department. The first year is funded by the Prins Bernhard Cultuurfondsbeurs and the School of Humanities and Social Sciences Bursary.
